This commentary discusses the anthropogenic emissions of carbon dioxide which is leading to an increasing instability of the climate and the key role that gender equality can play. It explains that a move to gender equality around the world with unprejudiced access to education and family planning will result in fewer children and less emissions. However it stresses that there must be a rapid and radical reduction of carbon emission by the rich as well in order to tackle the issue of climate change.
