The phenomenon of independence on dialysis is seeing a worldwide resurgence as scientifi c evidence, individual life stories with patient experiences and health care system imperatives combine to act as powerful drivers for change in the way we think about and approach dialysis care. This is guiding innovative solutions that can respond to patient needs. This volume contains a series of lectures delivered in the Symposium on Home Dialysis held in September 2010 in Manchester. This brought together an international panel of experts to discuss, describe and debate the nuts and bolts of dialysis with independence in association with a multidisciplinary UK and international audience. Here, we have tried to capture the spirit of the meeting and the enthusiasm, insight and resolve of all who took part.
