In conversation with Alterio, who in her interesting article explores the bases that best justify the global phenomenon of the adoption of gender quotas, the text defends that, in addition to the emphasis she places on substantive equality as potentially encompassing the concerns of many other underrepresented groups, it is necessary to understand the global phenomenon of gender quotas as pointing to a new conception of democracy that, subverting the sexual contract at the origin of the modern state, puts the emphasis on overcoming gender roles. From this perspective, although it is convenient to think of mechanisms that are sufficiently inclusive and respond to the under-representation of many other discriminated groups as well, the parity democracy measures must be defended as measures that have their own additional logic and a vocation of permanence.
