Foliar treatments of registered and nonregistered insecticides for first brood corn borer control were applied to dry land corn plots in Dixon County, Neb. on 3 July. Granular insecticides were applied in 15 gal of water/acre at 2 mph at 17 lb/in2. with a specially modified back pack sprayer. Each single row plot was 100 ft. Experimental design was randomized complete block with four replications. Before insecticide application 10 consecutive plants in each plot were infested with approximately 60 first-instar borer larvae using a hand-held inoculator. In mid-Aug., artificially infested corn plants were split in half from tassel to the ground, examined, and the number of corn borer cavities recorded.
