A direct-seeded lettuce test was planted Jul 29 on the Ferlito Muck Farm near Oswego. The plots were replicated 4 times, arranged in a randomized complete block design; each plot consisted of 4 treated rows, 30-ft long and 14-inches wide. Two untreated rows were planted on either side of each treatment. On Aug 8, the insecticide granules were applied with a modified, hand-operated cone seeder. They were banded on one side of the row, 2 inches from the seedlings and 2 inches deep. Orthene treatments were sprayed on the foliage with a CO2-pressurized, hand-held boom sprayer delivering 76 gals H2O/A. These sprays were applied weekly and aphids were counted at 3 and 6 days after each spray. Six plants were selected at random from the 2 middle rows of each treatment for the counts.
