The sweet corn utilized in this study was planted Apr 28’78 on the Ralph Cousins Farm, Derry, NH. Each plot consisted of a 30-foot row of corn and each treatment was replicated 4 times in a randomized complete block design. Spray treatments were applied to the whorls either 2 or 3 times starting at the whorl stage (18-20 inches tall) and extending into the pretassel stage. Spray applications were made using a one gallon B & G CO2 pressurized sprayer at 40 psi and a volume of 26 gallons/acre. Dyfonate 10GK was applied as a single application either directed over the whorls using a Gandy plot applicator and broadcasted using a Cyclone seeder. The broadcast treatment was applied alongside the randomized block to prevent cross contamination. Evaluations were made on Jul 20’78 by examining all the stalks and ears in each treatment and determining the percentage injured by the first brood European corn borer larvae.
