All insecticides were applied 5 days after transplanting (DT) as foliar sprays at the rate of 0.75 kg ai/ha, except for carbofuran which was applied at 0.25 kg. The foliar spray treatments were compared with the standard treatment of one application at 1 kg carbofuran or diazinon granules applied as a paddy-water-broadcast treatment. The study was conducted during the rainy season. Whorl maggot damage ratings were taken at 12, 20, and 30 DT and based on a standard evaluation system developed at IRRI: 0 = no damage; 9 = >50% of leaves damaged.
