The sweet corn was planted June 10 in Brookston silty clay loam in 4 rows 200 ft by 30 inches. Each treatment plot consisted of 50 ft of row, with 4 treatments replicated 4 times in a randomized complete block design. Sprays were applied with a hand-operated compressed-air sprayer 150 gal/A on July 7 (8-9 leaf whorl), 15 (11 leaf whorl), 20 (tassel emergence) and 29 (pollen shedding). The entire plant was covered by the first 3 sprays, but spray was directed to stem and leaf axils only (not all leaf surfaces) on the last spray. Borers were counted on August 8 by dissecting 25 plants per plot. None of the insecticides were phytotoxic. Orthene and Pounce performed satisfactorily, considering the extended interval between the last 2 sprays.
