Topical application tests of the contact toxicity of 25 insecticide formulations were conducted on last stage western spruce budworm. Insects were selected from the 50th to 60th generations of a non-diapausing laboratory colony. Five concentrations serially diluted from a freshly formulated concentrate were used in each of 3 replications for each insecticide. Treatment was performed with an ISCO model M microapplicator equipped with a 1/4-cc tuberculin syringe. A dose rate of 1 ul/100 mg body weight was used to apply the insecticides to the thoracic dorsa of C02-anesthetized insects weighing 70-110 mg. Mexacarbate was used as a standard for comparison.
