The proportionate contribution of a genotype to the next generation is not independent of frequency and cannot always safely be equated with a constant. Survival potential (Haldane's viability) permits the use of a genetic selection model which deals more realistically with competition. A broader property than survival potential, called fitness potential, should be distinguished from fitness, which it determines in a competitive context.
