Lay summary High flow speeds can mediate damaging impacts of sub-lethal thermal stress on a branching coral species, showing increased levels of endosymbiont photosystem health compared to corals under low flow conditions. However, eventual declines in physiology and no difference in bleaching under high and low flow conditions indicate that eventually thermal stress may overwhelm positive impacts of flow.
