The nature of clinical data is discussed. A model data structure which accommodates both the varying number of items between patients and the varying number of observations between items is proposed. Some user requirements for input and for both routine and research output are stated. A system which was constructed on these lines and which has been processing clinical data about patients with raised blood pressure for four years is described.
