The purpose of this paper is to describe a numerical technique that can be used to produce patterns called Character Maps. A very general formula is described first and the notation defined. Then a particular case is analysed and a normal form of notation derived. The normal form allows a Map to be fully defined using only one parameter. An explanation is then offered to account for the characteristics of the patterns. (Received June 1971)
