This paper was presented to a London meeting of The British Computer Society on 17 April 1967. It describes the purpose and nature of the Giro service which the Post Office is to open in the United Kingdom in the Autumn of 1968. The different facilities and charges are set out in detail, followed by some examples of the application of Giro to business methods. The paper emphasizes that Giro has been planned from the outset as a computer-based service and describes in detail the data processing problems which have been encountered.
