The test was conducted in a 4-yr-old ‘Fuji’ orchard in Milton-Freewater, OR. Trees were sprayed to the point of drip with a handgun sprayer operated at ca. 250 psi. There were buffer rows between each row containing treated trees, and at least one buffer tree between any two treatment trees within a row. Treatments were timed for three points in the phenological development of leafminers: 1st sapfeeder (1st SF), applied 20 Jun; 10% tissue feeder (TF), the current standard timing, applied 26 Jun; and 1st pupae, applied 4 Jul. Phenological samples (dissection of mines to determine the percentage in each stage) were taken twice weekly to determine the correct timing for pesticide applications. Population samples were taken ca. weekly.
