We discuss the application of two-particle-irreducible (2PI) functionaltechniques to gauge theories, focusing on the issue of non-perturbativerenormalization. In particular, we show how to renormalize the photon andfermion propagators of QED obtained from a systematic loop expansion of the 2PIeffective action. At any finite order, this implies introducing newcounterterms as compared to the usual ones in perturbation theory. We show thatthese new counterterms are consistent with the 2PI Ward identities and aresystematically of higher order than the approximation order, which guaranteesthe convergence of the approximation scheme. Our analysis can be applied to anytheory with linearly realized gauge symmetry. This is for instance the case ofQCD quantized in the background field gauge.Comment: 21 pages, 8 figures.
