New Drugs for Clostridium difficile Infection

or persistent disease, to give oral metron- idazole or oral vancomycin. Prior expe- rience with these drugs shows that they are generally effective for acute disease, but treatment is often complicated by recur- rences after treatment. Our experience with 189 patients, including 100 with en- doscopy-proven pseudomenbraneous co- litis, showed that 96% of the patients re- sponded to oral vancomycin, but 24% experienced relapses when vancomycin therapy was discontinued (5). Other stud- ies have reported a similar experience (6).
