Recent gamma-ray burst observations have revealed late-time, highly energeticevents which deviate from the simplest expectations of the standard fireballpicture. Instead they may indicate that the central engine is active orrestarted at late times. We suggest that fragmentation and subsequent accretionduring the collapse of a rapidly rotating stellar core offers a naturalmechanism for this.Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure; accepted by ApJ Letter
