The determinants of lifetime and recent place-to-place migration in Colombia are investigated using unpublished data from the 1973 census. The data cover 12 zones (rural and urban segments of 6 regions) and are analyzed for the population as a whole and for eight specific demographic groups including four educational categories and the two sexes. "The basic proposition is that areas economic opportunities play a central role in determining the spatial allocation of the population....The results give strong support to the economic model of migration overall and in explaining differences in migration behavior among demographic groups."
