We present low resolution optical spectroscopy for six cataclysmic variablecandidates and the old nova V888 Cen. We confirm the classification ascataclysmic variable for LB 9963 and FQ Mon, while the other four candidatesturn out to be different type of stars. We discuss the individual spectra andpay special attention to the mass transfer rate and disc temperature anddensity of the three cataclysmic variables.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in PAS
