Gamma-ray burst sources with a high luminosity can produce electron-positronpair cascades in their environment as a result of back-scattering of a seedfraction of their original hard spectrum. The resulting spectral modificationsoffer the possibility of diagnosing not only the compactness parameter of thegamma-ray emitting region but also the baryonic density of the environmentexternal to the burst.Comment: Ap.J. in press; aaspp4, 12 pages, 2 fig
