When the hepatitis B antigen is first adsorbed on a specially prepared metal surface, the subsequent reaction with its specific antibody produces complexes that are visible to the unaided eye. Application of this principle has led to the development of tests for both antigen and antibody that compare favorably with the sensitivity obtained by radioimmunoassay.
