It is well known that the molecules of water exist in various polymers. Water as a liquid is a system of three components (H. T. Barnes, 1928); ice, or trihydrol, which is present in greatest concentration at the freezing point; dihydrol, the main component at ordinary temperatures; and monohydrol, or steam, increasing as the temperature rises to the boiling point. The structural formula for trihydrol may be written
