In some states, recent consumer-driven legislation is putting health care providers under close public scrutiny. Physician profiling, effective in New York in April 2001 and already in effect in Massachusetts and Florida, will make information regarding such matters as criminal convictions, medical board disciplinary actions, restrictions of hospital privileges, and malpractice events involving indemnity payments available to the public.
