Many new excited states of D mesons have been discovered in the last few years, bringing renewed interest to heavy meson spectroscopy. In a series of publications, the LHCb collaboration has studied the properties of the D meson excited states using decays of B mesons into a D meson plus light hadrons. These results are reviewed in this paper.
