Reexamination of methods for calculating the initial slope of the dynamic structure factor demonstrates the importance of covert correlations between the motions and subsequent positions of interacting colloidal particles. These correlations, whose existence has hitherto not been explicitly emphasized, explain the numerical discrepancies between one‐ and two‐time derivative methods for calculating dS(k,t)/dt. A method for avoiding artifacts due to these correlations is presented
