A description of low emittance thermionic electron guns used for injection of electron beam into free electron lasers (FEL) and linear accelerators is given. A physical description of electron beam emitted from thermionic cathodes is sketched. Examples of electron guns used in FEL’s and electron linacs are presented. (AIP)
