The propagation dynamics of space-charge-limited femtosecond electron pulse, propagating in a photoelectron gun, were investigated. The experiment involved the use of an analytical approach based on mean-field theory and a numerical N-body simulations for studying the electron space-charge dynamics in an ultrafast electron packet. The experimental results when compared with the fluid model concluded that the fluid model overestimated the pulse duration after a certain propagation time.
