Global delivery models: The role of talent, speed and time zones in the global outsourcing industry

Global delivery models (GDMs) are transforming the global IT and business process outsourcing industry. GDMs are a new form of client-specific investment promoting service integration with clients by combining client proximity with time-zone spread for 24/7 service operations. We investigate antecedents and contingencies of setting up GDM structures. Based on comprehensive data we show that providers are likely to establish GDM location configurations when clients value access to globally distributed talent and speed of service delivery, in particular when services are highly commoditized. Findings imply that coordination across time zones increasingly affects international operations in business-to-business and born-global industries.AbstractLes modèles mondiaux de prestation de services (MMPS) transforment l’industrie globale des technologies de l’information et de l’externalisation des processus d’affaires. Les MMPS constituent une nouvelle forme d’investissement, spécifique aux clients, qui favorise l’intégration de services pour les clients en combinant la proximité du client avec la répartition des zones de fuseaux horaires pour des opérations de service 24/7. Nous examinons les antécédents et les contingences concernant la mise en place de structures de type MMPS. En nous appuyant sur des données exhaustives, nous montrons que les prestataires sont susceptibles d’établir des configurations géographiques spécifiques concernant les MMPS quand les clients valorisent l’accès aux talents répartis à l’échelle mondiale et la vitesse de livraison de services, en particulier quand les services font l’objet d’une forte marchandisation. Les résultats montrent que la coordination transversale au niveau des fuseaux horaires influence de manière croissante les opérations internationales dans les industries B to B et nées globales.AbstractLos modelos de entrega globales (GDMs) están transformando la industria de la externalización de procesos en los negocios y las TIC a nivel global. GDMs son una nueva forma de inversión específica en el cliente que promueve la integración de servicios con clientes a través de combinar la proximidad del cliente con las diferencias en las zonas horarias para una operación de servicio 24/7. Investigamos los antecedentes y contingencias de la creación de estructuras GDM. Sobre una base de datos exhaustiva mostramos cómo algunos proveedores tienden a establecer configuraciones de ubicación de GDM cuando los clientes valoran el acceso a talento globalmente distribuido y velocidad en el tiempo de entrega del servicio, en particular cuando los servicios son de consumo masivo. Los hallazgos suponen que la coordinación entre zonas horarias incrementalmente afecta las operaciones internacionales en las industrias de negocio-a-negocio, y las industrias nacidas globales.AbstractModelos globais de entrega (GDMS) estão transformando as tecnologias de informação globais e a indústria de terceirização de processos de negócio. Com base em dados abrangentes nós mostramos que provedores são susceptíveis ao estabelecimento de configurações de localização GDM quando os clientes valorizam o acesso ao talento globalmente distribuído e a velocidade na prestação de serviços, em especial quando os serviços são altamente padronizados.
