By the beginning of 2000, there were more than seventy initiatives in Europe that referred to themselves as ‘Euroregions’, as ‘Euregios’ or in similar terms. These initiatives consist of more or less stable cooperative arrangements between neighbouring local or regional authorities across a European nation-state border, and can be subsumed under the rubric of ‘cross-border cooperation’ (CBC).
