There are many unanswered astronomical questions about the chemical basis of life; a meeting held in August this year by the Astrophysical Chemistry Group of the RAS and the Royal Society of Chemistry took as its starting point the understanding of a number of questions, and reviews of progress towards the answers, report Anita Richards and Peter Sarre .
