Of the 2.5 million students studying at universities in the UK some 30% [500 000 postgraduate taught (PGT) + 100 000 postgraduate research (PGR) students] are studying for a postgraduate degree1, and the decade from 2001 to 2011 saw a 7% year-on-year increase in the number of students registering for postgraduate degrees.
