When studying for a postgraduate qualification in 1999, if I wanted a copy of an article, I had to find the right journal volume in the library, stagger down a flight of stairs and through two sets of swing doors balancing a pile of big dusty tomes, and queue for the photocopier, which more often than not was broken. This was certainly not the most efficient way to research the literature, and my efforts were being mirrored all over the world by researchers looking for information.
