In her speech to Cambridge AWiSE (Association for Women in Science and Engineering) in September 2009, Esther Haines opened with a response to a Natural History Museum questionnaire: “Being a woman has had little negative impact on my life as a scientist, but being a scientist has had a seriously detrimental effect on my life as a woman”1
