We wished to run a workshop for L6th students (and others at an equivalent stage) in order to introduce them to biochemistry as a subject area. There were two main reasons for doing this: (i) although biochemistry forms part of the AS Biology and Chemistry syllabuses, it does not have an identity in its own right, and (ii) we have observed a misconception among some students in that age group that, in order to pursue a career in medical research, it is necessary to have a degree in medicine or pharmacy.
