The eminent scientist the late Sir Richard Doll embarked 56 years ago on a project to find out what caused lung cancer. In a seminal piece of research, he followed the lives and the deaths of 40 000 doctors, and was able to prove the link between smoking and this terrible disease. Since then, this finding has saved many millions of lives around the world.
