As someone with early training in the physical sciences and a career-long interest in the participation of women in science, I think we should celebrate the changes that have occurred in the biosciences over the last 20 years and recognize the strong contribution that women now make across the biosciences. In comparison with the physical sciences, women are progressing and their participation is increasing at senior levels. This is not a reason to be complacent about the challenges that are still there for women, but to recognize that there has been progress, and to recognize that we should continue to collect and monitor data on women's participation in science so that we can focus on the barriers that still exist.
