Spring has arrived as I sit down to write this article in the garden of my Dundee home. Next to the dry-stane dyke and ahead of my Aquilegia, Arabidopsis plants have come into flower. They must think there is something special about this time of year, as I've seen them first come into flower here in April of the last 3 years (Figure 1). How do they know that April has arrived?
