Who can name the ten top male scientists who have ever lived? Answers will vary depending on your interests, but the majority of scientists shouldn't have a problem in naming ten, or perhaps even 20. Now what about the top ten female scientists? Much more difficult perhaps! Names such as Marie Curie and Rosalind Franklin are no doubt in the list, but what about in the last 10 years? How many men have won the Nobel prize for medicine in the last 5 years, compared with the number of women? (The answer is that no women have won the Nobel prize in the last 5 years. Indeed, in the last 20 years only three women have been awarded this prestigious prize, compared with 40 men.)
