It is fitting that on the very day of the ‘Biochemists in pursuit of numeracy’ colloquium at Biochemical Society's Cardiff Meeting, a letter on the subject should appear in that morning's edition of The Times1. It described the following exchange:Writer: “Give me a kilogram of your best cheddar.” Clerk: “We are only allowed to sell in grams, sir.” Writer: “Just give me one thousand grams then!”
