The inability of the Funding Councils to fund fully the improved research performance found in the Research Assessment Exercise 2001 (RAE 2001) left many departments in a difficult financial position, and a number of important policy questions to be answered. These included how the biosciences community should regard the resulting drive to diversity of university missions; whether it is essential for teaching to be informed by research; and how research should be assessed in the future. Delegates attending the Society's annual Heads of Department Meeting in May were keen to discuss these issues.
