After a 21‐year absence, scientific drilling returned to the high latitudes of the north Pacific from July to September 1992 (Figure 1). The main objectives of the Ocean Drilling Program's Leg 145 were to collect high‐resolution records of Miocene to Quaternary changes in ocean circulation, biological activity, and global climate, and to recover high‐latitude Paleogene and Cretaceous carbonate‐bearing sediments to help decipher the oceanographic record of the old Northern Hemisphere Pacific.
