An unprecedented partial reduction of 2,2′-bipyrimidine (bpym) occurred, affording the H6bpym2− moiety, during the one-pot self-assembly of neutral Re(I)-based molecular rectangles and bimetallic products under solvothermal conditions. Their structures were unambiguously characterized by 1H NMR and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses, and their electrochemical, electronic absorption, and photoluminescent properties were studied. The reaction pathway was also investigated.
