The synthesis of a pentacyclic intermediate in only six steps from 3-acetylindole in good overall yield nicely establishes our route to complex indole alkaloids. The intramolecular Diels-Alder/enol silyl ether alkylation strategy has not previously been employed for the synthesis of indole alkaloids
