The tour pattern choice behaviour of urban freight trucks in the Tokyo Metropolitan Area is analysed. We formulate an econometric-based travel choice model under the framework of recursive-logit modelling by which it is possible to describe the spatiotemporal choice behaviour of freight trucks that eventually return to their base facilities or zones after repeating sequential destination choices in traveling to their customers’ locations. Model parameters are estimated using a rich dataset of Global Positioning System trajectories for trucks and most signs of coefficients of parameters match intuition. We finally simulate changes in the travel patterns of freight trucks when a time-dependent area charging scheme is implemented in city centre of Tokyo.
