The academic bend of the Indian electrophysiologist is evident from the fact that the Indian Pacing and Electrophysiology Journal (IPEJ) was launched in 2001, four years before the formation of Indian Heart Rhythm Society (IHRS). The journal and the society have come a long way since then. However, we have to admit that our potential is limitless, especially to improve the standard and reach of arrhythmia care in India and satisfy our scientific desire. There are exciting times ahead of us with rapid progress in ablation and pacing technologies. The advanced arrhythmia mapping techniques promise to shorten the procedure timewithmore dense geometry creation. Cryoablation for AF has a niche role and hopefully in due course of time it will be available in India. His bundle pacing and the much-awaited dual chamber leadless pacemakers are likely to revolutionize the way we implant devices. IHRS has nearly 200 members and it is estimated that only half of them perform ablations and advanced pacing on a regular basis. We serve a population of 1.35 billion, this amounts to one electrophysiologist for nearly 10 million Indians! In my opinion, the greatest contribution by the present generation electrophysiologist will be to motivate, train and mentor at least 10 electrophysiologists each and aim towards creating a pool of 1000 qualified electrophysiologists in the coming years.
