I knew Francois Jacob only slightly and yet, ever since graduate school, he has been my constant companion. Hardly a week has gone by without my asking him what he would think of this or that result, this or that sentence in a paper, and so on. What he would have thought of this impertinence I cannot say, because I never really let him know—the discussion went on mostly in my head. And so on hearing of his death at 92 in Paris, I began to ponder again the source of his powers that were—to me, anyway—magical.
