The article discusses the continuing legacy of 1989 on the operations of the EU today. The author contends that the withdrawal of the state from the private lives of citizens means that citizens must take responsibility for their own lives. Economic and social inequality are a reality for countries in transition, and it is crucial that efforts to achieve stability remain the responsibility of European citizens, that they not rely solely on the EU or on Member State governments for support. If they do, the lessons learned from 1989 are being ignored.
