We investigate the possibility of generating fermion masses through radiative corrections in the well-defined framework of SU(2)LX U(1). No-go theorems, however, imply a complete tree-level description of the spectrum with at least one electroweak singlet scalar and suggest therefore the need of new gauge interactions
