Excitation spectra for intra‐ (4f n → 4f n ) and interconfigurational (4f n–1 5d → 4f n ) radiative transitions of trivalent rare earth ions doped into SrF 2 crystals have been investigated using VUV synchrotron radiation. The intra‐centre and band‐to‐band excitation mechanisms are discussed. (© 2007 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
